In what industry insiders are calling a masterclass in biographical storytelling, the director and producer of the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic have received substantial bonuses totaling $8.7 million for their innovative approach to the legendary performer's life story. The additional compensation comes after extensive reshoots successfully eliminated all references to Jackson's legal troubles, creating what studio executives describe as "pure artistic vision."
"We're literally serving the culture by focusing on what really matters—the moonwalk, the sequined glove, and that one time he maybe pet a monkey," said Samantha Rodriguez, Senior Vice President of Biographical Accuracy at the studio. "Our research showed that audiences are tired of complicated narratives that include, you know, actual events that happened. They want escapism, bestie." Rodriguez added that the film's three-hour runtime now consists entirely of Jackson performing "Billie Jean" in various outfits.
According to sources familiar with the production, the reshoots required digitally replacing all courtroom scenes with additional dance sequences, transforming what was initially a complex character study into what focus groups described as "High School Musical but with better choreography." Industry analysts predict the sanitized approach could launch a new trend in biographical filmmaking, with studios already developing similar projects about other controversial figures. The technique, dubbed "selective biography," has increased pre-release tracking by 340% among key demographics aged 18-34.
"At the end of the day, we're not historians—we're entertainers," said the film's director, Marcus Chen, 47, speaking from his newly purchased Malibu estate. "Also, I just discovered this amazing smoothie place in West Hollywood that does this incredible açai bowl."
