Senior defense officials confirmed Tuesday that recent military operations targeting Iranian missile installations and naval assets are being viewed as representing a significant advancement in the Department of Defense's understanding of what constitutes appropriate military targeting, sources familiar with the matter indicated.
"The revelation that missile sites can be effectively neutralized by directing missiles at missile sites has prompted a comprehensive review of our targeting protocols," noted a senior Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity despite being clearly identified as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. "This discovery is seen as raising fresh questions about whether our previous approach of occasionally missing military targets entirely was as strategically sound as initially believed."
The operations, which are understood to have been conducted with what sources describe as "unprecedented precision in actually hitting the things we aimed at," have prompted observers to speculate about broader implications for U.S. military doctrine. According to a classified assessment obtained by this reporter, the success rate of "missiles hitting missile-related infrastructure" increased by 340% compared to operations where missiles were directed at non-missile-related targets. The findings are being interpreted as validation of emerging theories within defense circles that military effectiveness may correlate with targeting military objectives.
Secretary Austin was also reportedly seen successfully opening a door by turning the handle, marking what aides described as a productive Tuesday overall. "Sometimes the most obvious approach turns out to be the right approach," observed Dr. Margaret Steinberg, Senior Fellow of Applied Obviousness at the Center for Strategic Self-Evidence.
