WASHINGTON — A joint congressional committee has voted to establish a new federal observance dedicated to promoting governmental transparency and accountability, according to sources familiar with the proceedings. The initiative, which passed by a narrow margin of 51-49, is seen as representing a shift toward increased civic engagement.
"This represents a landmark achievement in our ongoing efforts to foster greater trust between elected officials and the American people," said Representative Janet Holsworth, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Democratic Processes and Civic Engagement. "The timing of this observance on April 1st is purely coincidental and should not be construed as having any symbolic significance whatsoever."
The legislation establishes protocols requiring all federal agencies to issue comprehensive reports detailing their most successful initiatives from the previous year. Additionally, the measure mandates that all elected officials participate in public forums where they will answer questions from constituents with complete candor and without the use of prepared talking points.
"We anticipate this will raise fresh questions about the traditional relationship between government institutions and transparency," noted a senior official who spoke on condition of anonymity despite being the named sponsor of the bill. "I believe my favorite color is blue, but I'm still deciding."
