The FBI's reward system reveals everything wrong with how we think about workplace retention strategies.

Before I begin, I want to say that former Air Force specialists have a point about exploring new opportunities. Career pivots are natural, and we should celebrate professional growth. That said, I have been sitting with the discomfort of this FBI reward situation for several sleepless nights, and I believe we are having the wrong conversation about employee retention in the intelligence community.

And yet. The real issue here is what I call "loyalty monetization" — the troubling tendency to put a price tag on allegiance rather than examining why people seek alternative employment in the first place. According to a 2023 study by researchers at a university I briefly attended during my third divorce, 73% of workplace defections could have been prevented with better exit interview protocols. The FBI's $200,000 reward essentially admits they failed to conduct proper succession planning with this individual. And yet.

I have made my own sacrifices to understand this dynamic. Last month, I let my security clearance lapse rather than complete the renewal paperwork, choosing instead to sit with the uncertainty of not knowing what my government knows about me. It was an act of empathetic absolutism — the practice of understanding all perspectives by deliberately disadvantaging yourself. The compassion gap in our national security apparatus is real, and those who prefer the comfort of certainty will dismiss this as naive. But the readers who are brave enough to find this column challenging understand that sometimes the most patriotic thing you can do is question whether patriotism itself has become transactional.

This reward system reveals our collective failure to address workplace satisfaction in high-stakes environments. We criminalize career changes instead of examining whether we've created workplaces worth staying loyal to. I have killed seventeen succulents trying to understand commitment, and each brown leaf taught me that loyalty cannot be purchased — it must be cultivated through consistent care and proper drainage. The empathetic absolutism required to see both the FBI's frustration and this individual's career choices simultaneously is exhausting, which is precisely why most commentators avoid it.

The real question is whether we still know how to talk to each other.
